This painting was a trial to see if I could capture one of those brilliant starlit nights which occur out at sea, often in the tropics. The band of the Milky Way, the Southern Cross and the Coal Sack are clear. The vessel is the old Baltic trader, Soren Larsen which takes passengers on cruises and is well known around New Zealand.
